HOLYOKE, Mass. (October 12, 2006) - Six international greats of volleyball from Brazil, Hungary, Japan, Poland, Russia and the United States were inducted into the Volleyball Hall of Fame in an afternoon ceremony at the birthplace of the sport.

Jackie Silva of Brazil, Endre Holvay of Hungary, Shigeo Yamada of Japan, Edward Skorek of Poland, Nina Smoleeva of the USSR/Russia and Bernie Holtzman of the United States were also honored at a dinner at the Log Cabin Banquet and Meeting House.

As part of the Centennial celebration in 2006, the NCAA has created a list of the 100 Most Influential Student-Athletes.

The NCAA defines the Most Influential Student-Athletes as those who have made a significant impact or major contributions to society.

Jackie Robinson, Arthur Ashe, Jesse Owens, Dwight D. Eisenhower and John Wooden top the list. Women account for 25% of those chosen. How many of the names do you recognize? (more…)

TALLADEGA, Ala. April 27 2006 - Janet Guthrie, the first woman to compete in the Indianapolis 500 and in the Daytona 500, was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame on Thursday, April 27. Guthrie’s induction places her among the late seven-time NASCAR champion Dale Earnhardt, NASCAR driver Harry Gant, team owner Jack Roush and promoter Humpy Wheeler. (more…)

On July 22, 2006 crowds gathered at Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio, to cheer 530 kids from 48 U.S. states and five foreign countries who earned the right competing in the 69th world championship of the All-American Soap Box Derby (AASBD). If you’ve ever wanted to make a guy eat your dust, this may be the event for you.

An icon of Americana, the Soap Box Derby dates to 1933, when boys raced in homemade, engineless cars they fashioned from soapboxes, orange crates and baby-buggy wheels. It wasn’t until 1971, however, that girls were allowed to compete in the All-American Soap Box Derby. (more…)

The popular Gidget TV series (starring Sally Field) was a sequel to a movie (Gidget Goes to Rome) that was a sequel to two or three other movies, all the way back to the first Gidget, a wacky movie starring Sandra Dee.

The first film was itself an adaptation of a novel, Gidget, The Little Girl With the Big Ideas. Written by Frederick Kohner fifty years ago, it was based on the real surf adventures of Kohner’s teenage daughter in Malibu the summer of 1956. (more…)
