India’s Pink GangJan. 31, 2008 - If you’re a guy in the Banda district of India who beats your wife,  or otherwise mistreats women, you’d better watch out. A posse of vigilante women wearing pink saris may soon come after you, and it’s not going to be pretty.

The remote Banda northern district is notorious for its ill-treatment of women and the “Gulabi Gang” (Pink Gang) isn’t going to stand for it.  Having personally suffered abuse, these 200 self-styled female Robin Hoods are often forced to fight violence with violence.

Two years after they gave themselves a name and an attire, the women in pink have thrashed men who have abandoned or beaten their wives, confronted apathetic cops, and unearthed corruption in the distribution of grain to the poor. While we don’t necessarily advocate vigilante violence, until the rule of law can be established, it looks like justice will just have to be administered by grrrl power.

Patriots vs. Giants - SuperbowlJan. 30, 2008 - Superbowl Sunday (this Sun. Feb. 3) is the most anticipated Sunday of the year. Superbowl is also a great excuse to throw a party. And no, NFL football and the Superbowl are not just for guys.

The key to a successful party is a winning game plan (sorry, just had to make that analogy). If you haven’t already sent invites, go for the fast easy method and send out themed evites.

Next most important item for a Superbowl party is a television set. Big HDTV is the best way to go, but as long as there is a decent sized screen, you’re set. Tivo is also preferred so you can rewind to go back to key points in the game, and re-watch the best commercials.

Pre-game: Create a good game watching atmosphere. Deck out the house with pennants and other things game-related. Team colors for both the New England Patriots and the New York Giants are red, white and blue (the Pats also sport silver) so the color scheme shouldn’t be too hard.

Go Red for WomenFriday, February 1, is the fifth anniversary of National Wear Red Day. It’s the day to wear your favorite red clothes or accessory - a red blouse, a red dress pin, a fabulous red handbag - put on red lipstick, or sport a red tie and red socks. Go red in your own fashion to show your support for women and the fight against heart disease.

The American Heart Association has made a significant impact around the issue of women and heart disease. In the last five years they’ve raised awareness of the fact that heart disease is the number one killer of women. However, there are still too many women who are not aware of this disease and the actions they can take to reduce their risk.

Macy’s, a proud national sponsor of Go Red For Women, will help celebrate the fifth anniversary by offering an all-day savings pass for an extra 15% off apparel and accessories for customers wearing red. So you can shop and not feel guilty about it!

Linder Saperstein - boxerLONDON, Jan. 30, 2008 - Serious, smart and sexy with a sledgehammer-like right hand, Laura Saperstein has touched off something of a mini-media frenzy in the UK while quickly becoming one of the hottest prospects in British boxing since making her pro debut last November..

The former highly successful corporate lawyer has been the focus of countless newspapers articles and the subject of television programs, where she has on occasion proceeded to give painful boxing lessons to unsuspecting presenters.

Despite her unusual career path, the native Australian is no mere novelty, having ended her amateur career as an undefeated British lightweight champion but is more suited to the professional game as anyone who has witnessed her gritty performance last Autumn in South London can readily attest to.

Women’s FootballJan. 29, 2008 - Do you think football is for boys only? Think again. Did you know there is probably a women’s professional tackle football team near you? Currently there are over 70 teams nationwide. From Maine to California, Wisconsin to Miami, teams of women of all ages are making their dreams come true.

If you are under 18, there is still an opportunity for you to play. Girls from all across the country are playing football on high school teams. Think you can’t be a lineman or a quarterback, think again. Girls all over the country are tackling football!

Did you know that it’s against the law to forbid a girl to tryout for a high school or college football team if there is no girl’s football team currently available? Passed by Congress in 1972, Title IX states “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of gender, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” This goes for any sport!!!

Currently there are three women’s professional leagues: Independent Women’s Football League (IWFL), National Women’s Football Association (NWFA), and the Women’s Professional Football League (WPFL).

Rena Inoue & John BaldwinRena Inoue didn’t win a gold medal at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships this weekend - but she did get the guy.  If you’re a hopeless romantic (like me), you have to see the video and photos of Olympic pairs skaters John Baldwin and Rena Inoue, as John proposed to Rena after their silver medal performance at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships.

After taking their bows, Rena turned and found John on bended knee. He not only surprised the crowd at the Xcel Energy Center but he also stunned Rena with the proposal. He had to ask twice before she said yes,  hugging him as tears rolled down her face. Later, she told PEOPLE:

“I was shocked I saw him on one knee and thought he was going to tell me how proud he was – and then he asked me to marry him. Then I started crying and I said yes.”

The two have been skating partners since 2000. They both had their own singles careers and were brought together upon the urging of John’s father. It wasn’t long before the two became a couple off the ice as well.

Marriage proposals are not uncommon at sporting events, but they usually involve fans and a banner towed by an airplane. How often do two athletic participants get engaged during their competition in front of an arena full of thousands of people and a live national television audience?

Though the couple may not have won the competition, they certainly came in first in the hearts of fans.

Gym Dog Courtney McCoolJan. 29, 2008 - After posting a season-best and nation-high 197.550 in their win over LSU, the Gym Dogs are back to the No. 1 collegiate gymnastics ranking in the country.

“We like being ranked No. 1,” Georgia head coach Suzanne Yoculan said. “It’s where we belong, and we like the pressure. We’re definitely used to it.”

Following Georgia in this week’s rankings are Utah at No. 2, Florida at No. 3, Alabama at No. 4 and Michigan at No. 5. The Gym Dogs have faced the firs two and will go up against the other two as well in 2008.

In addition to an overall team ranking of No. 1, Georgia also comes in at the top five on all four individual events. The Gym Dogs are first on bars and floor, tied for second on vault and third on beam.

Georgia also has several gymnasts ranked in the top 10 in individual categories. Courtney Kupets is fourth in the all-around and on vault and is ranked No. 1 on the uneven bars. Katie Heenan (6) and Grace Taylor (10) are also top-10 on bars. Heenan also is seventh on beam. Courtney McCool, after scoring 9.900s or better in all four meets including a 9.975 against LSU, now is the nation’s top-ranked floor worker as well.

Gymnastics rankings still are based on pure averages until Feb. 11, when Regional Qualifying Scores (RQS) will be used to determine a team’s ranking.
