Published by Razorbill (Penguin Group), Pretty Tough by Liz Tigelaar is the first in a series about a group of Southern California girls as comfortable in a ponytail and running shoes as glitter and high heels.
Who says you can’t be both pretty AND tough? These girls constantly push limits and kick grass on and off the field. Perfect for Young Adult readers tired of the same old chick lit.
Reviews
“The true depths of the bonds of sisterhood are realized in this heartwarming and heart pumping novel full of love, acceptance, drama, strength and forgiveness.” - The Compulsive Reader
“This is a well-paced book with solid character development and witty, authentic dialogue. The relationship between the siblings is both strong and complicated. With its classic themes of sisterhood and romance, the book is an updated version of Francine Pascal’s ‘Sweet Valley High’ series (Random), with a sports twist.”-School Library Journal
“Readers will find themselves engaged, touched, and moved by this look inside a thorny relationship between two strong and complicated sisters. The sports elements balanced with those exploring the dynamics of friendship make this a title that will have broad appeal.” -KLIATT
…a fun and a worthwhile read. - VOYA
“This book was great! It was such a fun read, I could hardly put it down. You really get in the middle of the competition between the sisters and can relate if you have any sort of competitive bone in your body. Dialogue very believable and contains drama, comedy and even action! Highly recommend! - Erica Riedel
“Pretty Tough” was more than pretty good–it was GREAT, I loved it. The characters were real, with real problems. I liked how the author switched between Krista and Charlie’s perspective–it was like you were in their head dealing with the relationships and twists of the book. I’ve recommended it to all my friends at school as a must read. Lauren #13
This was a really good book, i liked how it was about what girls really have to go through and it was about soccer. How much better can it get?-Deidra Woodward, Blackhills Football Club GU-15 player
I found Pretty Tough to be an engaging, entertaining read. The characters are real and I suspect most readers will recognize a bit of themselves in at least one of the characters as I did (hopefully it’s not Brooks!) I loved the soccer action and the underlying message that soccer players, and female athletes in general, come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and personalities. Pretty Tough would be a great mother/daughter read as it will surely open channels of discussion about issues that girls are bound to be faced with as they navigate their way through school and sports.-Gayle Bryan, Publishing Director, Fair Game Magazine
Pretty Tough was awesome. I liked it as much, if not more, than The Clique and Gossip Girls. Reminded me so much of my sister and I. Charlie is so cool and the best character of all. Hope someone makes a movie out of it like Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.Taylor H. West Hartford, Conn.
All the players on my team enjoyed reading “Pretty Tough”. They are really looking forward to reading the next book. J. Charette, Wembley Soccer Academy
Love your book! I had one of the (advance) copies that were sent out, I read it in two days, I just couldn’t put it down! Kat
Whoo hoo. Finally a book about real girls. Not those stuck up wannabes. I loved everything about this book - the characters, the sports, the dialogue and especially the end. Liz is truly a great writer. I’ll read anything she writes. Devon P.
“What a Great book for young female soccer players! It feels like you’re actually on the team as you read the book. My players could relate to these characters and the obstacles the characters faced throughout the story! A must read for young teen soccer players and enthusiasts!”~Malia Arrant, Dosveedanya Director of Coaching
“I thought it was a good book. My favorite part was when they started the season and when they made it to the state tournament.”~ Danielle, Federal Way, WA
“Compared to all of the books I have previously read about soccer, I think this one was the best. I loved everything about this book, it kept me very occupied and it was a real page-turner. My favorite parts of the story was how the author described the two sisters scoring the goals in their games because it was so detailed and it almost seemed like I was there watching it. I could picture the current scene in my head and imagine what is going on. I really got into this book, and I absolutely loved reading it! 4 1/2 stars out of 5!!!”~Jordan, Kent WA
“I loved the book. it was super good… I read it in like.. one day. I would definitely recommend it to girls who play soccer especially girls with sisters and who are around my age. ~Reilly 13 Years old
“I thought the book was very good. And very interesting. My favorite part was the tryouts and when they played soccer.”-Molly, Kent, WA
“This is a great teen book, great for beach reading and chick lit. Two sisters, Charlie and Krista, have some serious issues with each other, a new soccer coach recruits Charlie who used to play soccer but now just loves to surf— to play on their high school team and just to spite her sister, Charlie goes out for the team and then the fireworks really start. The book is fast paced, dealing with insecurity, popularity and other issues teen will identify with. I liked the coach Martie and felt she did a good job as coach, mentor and role model. I will definitely be booktalking this in September.”-BJ
“Liz Tigelaar has done a great job of letting the reader re-live her best soccer moments. From pre-season, to the first game, to the dynamics of any women’s team…it is fantastic. This book is a fun, playful end-of-summer book and I highly recommend it.” Ruth Doyle
