Behind the Scenes at Bound 4 Beijing

Keri MikulskiMay 13, 2008 - On Saturday, I had the pleasure of obtaining a press pass to watch Team USA take on the 2007 NPF champions, Washington Glory in front of a sold out crowd in Bowie, Maryland. To all the fastpitch fans out there, if Bound 4 Beijing is within driving distance, go.

The experience of watching the game was amazing and the atmosphere was electrifying as close to 9,000 fans witnessed the US defeat Washington, 2-0.

After the game, I took part in an interview session with shortstop, Natasha Watley, pitcher, Monica Abbott, and coach, Mike Candrea. It was interesting to learn that the players are preparing for the Olympics by playing games within games.  In other words, they place mental pressure on themselves within different plays, pitches, at bats, etc. like it’s actual moments of the Olympic games.

Keri MikulskiBoth Watley and Abbott enthusiastically stated that they were thrilled to play in front of such a huge crowd and are looking forward to playing in Beijing. But, is the future of fastpitch in jeopardy?

It’s perplexing to think that softball will not be part of the 2012 Olympics after playing in front of so many sold out 2008 crowds.Candrea stated that USA Softball is working hard to get fastpitch back into the Olympics and are working on convincing the Europeans to get softball reinstated. Fingers crossed. Keri Mikulski

The US Women’s Softball team truly defines pretty tough. Tough and pretty on the field, these girls exhibit star quality off the field and one can’t help but stare at each awesome athlete. In pure pretty tough fashion, the players were asked about their girly habits. Watley shared that the girliest thing she likes to do is to buy tons of purses. Abbott stated that she enjoys pedicures. All the players were super nice and even lined up to sign autographs after the game.

If you’re going to a Bound 4 Beijing game and want to snag some autographs, bring a ball and start lining up by the dugouts around the sixth or seventh inning. Also, carry cash. The tees, sweats, headbands, and posters are must haves. Don’t forget to tune in tonight to watch Team USA take on Michigan at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN2.
