November 27, 2008 - When it comes to Thanksgiving weekend lots of people think football (after feast and family of course). To be sure, there are a lot of high-stakes late-season college battles and numerous high-school homecoming games around the nation.

If you need some tips for getting into the game (whether watching or playing), be sure to review our Football Basics and Football Lingo. By now, we’re sure you know that football is definitely not just for guys so don’t miss out on a second of fun.

Enjoy your day and be sure to make time to tell the people you love how thankful you are that they’re in your life.

May your stuffing be tasty
May your turkey plump,
May your potatoes and gravy
Have never a lump.
May your yams be delicious
And your pies take the prize,
And may your Thanksgiving dinner
Stay off your thighs!

October 22, 2008 - If you’re not already familiar with Sports Illustrated “Faces in the Crowd” you should be. Each week, the magazine features six student-athletes from various sports. And guess what? In a media property not generally known for repping those with an xx chromosome, girls seem to get props equal to the guys.

In addition to featuring athletes in sports such as soccer, volleyball and cross country, the magazine highlights girls who are particpating in less traditional pursuits.

Middle school wrestler Kiera Gabaldon was one of the athletes highlighted in a recent edition. Here is the magazine’s summary of Kiera’s accomplishments:

Kiera, a seventh-grader at Houck Middle School, won two national wrestling titles: the Women’s Body Bar Freestyle (novice 111 pounds) and last year’s U.S. Girls’ Wrestling Association tournament (elementary 91 pounds). At the Oregon state boys’ meet she was second in freestyle and third in Greco-Roman.

Another recent entry highlights Elizabeth Mitchum and Kaci Poole, junior kickers at Pelion High in South Carolina, who are believed to be the first two girls to score points for the same team in a varsity football game; on Sept. 12 each kicked an extra point in a 42-13 victory over Wagener-Salley.

And from the coaching ranks comes Kim Terrell-Kearney, 43, the head bowling coach at Delaware State. Terrell-Kearney defeated Trisha Reid 216-189 to win the U.S. Women’s Open for the second time. (She also won in 2001.) She was a two-time college All-America at San Jose State and the 1989 pro tour rookie of the year.

It’s so great to honor these female athletes in a national forum. If you know someone you think should be featured, it’s easy to nominate them. Just go to sportsillustrated.com to fill out a form and tell about the athlete’s accomplishments.

Located in Huntsville, Alabama, the Tigers will play their first season in the spring of 2009. However, these ladies are no strangers to football. Many of them have played on other women’s football teams; some for over 8 years! These women are excited to play new teams and enjoy old rivalries.

Look out! The Clarksville Fox, located in Clarsksville, Tennessee is made of women who have played against the Huntsville-based team before. And there’s no love loss between these two teams. The Kentucky Nightmare is another new team made of women the Tigers have played. With old frenemies and a new league, the TN Valley Tigers hope to continue the tradition of women’s football in the South.

You can visit the Tigers’ website at www.tigersiwfl.com for more information. Please support your local women’s football team - from Canada to Miami, Maine to California, this sport is taking over!

Palmer will sign autographs and take questions about the movie.

The H-Town Cyclones will also announce the dates for their girl’s football camps. “This is a wonderful opportunity for little girls to come and meet one of the hottest young stars in the movies and on the Disney channel and to meet many of the top female women football players in the world. ”

The H-Town (Texas) Cyclones are the top women’s football team in the world having just won the world championship last month in Memphis.
June 30, 2008 - Did you know the National Women’s Football Association is currently hosting playoffs? Last weekend, several teams advanced to the second round of playoffs. The Columbus Comets will travel to the Philadelphia Phoenix; the H’Town Cyclones to the St. Louis Slam; the West Michigan Mayhem to the New York Nemesis; and the Kentucky Karma to the Los Angeles Amazons.

The Kentucky Karma beat the Pensacola Power to advance to the second round of playoffs last Saturday. That gives Kentucky ONE WEEK to prepare for the Los Angeles Amazons. Not only does the Karma need airplane tickets and hotel rooms, they also need to do this during a holiday weekend. This is a daunting task for this unbelievable team. With gas prices high and travel accommodations desperate, the Karma is asking for help. Here’s where YOU can help.

The Kentucky Karma are currently seeking donations, large or small, via paypal.

If you would like to donate money to the KY Karma Los Angeles trip, please use www.PayPal.com and send to account wwwebby@yahoo.com

If you are not comfortable with using PayPal, please contact KY Karma General Manager Geoff Webb @ 502-640-3935 or email at wwwebby@yahoo.com
KY Karma owner, Tom Hawkins @ 502-773-2607 or email at mshtlh@bellsouth.net

**For additional information on all playoff games in the NWFA go to www.womensfootballcentral.com.

These ladies deserve a trip to the playoffs. Please help them out in their time of need!

Partly because our latest book, Playing with the Boys, is about a high school girl who plays football. But also because the women’s season kicks off this month and we’ve met such an amazing and eclectic group of athletes that participate in the sport.

To celebrate the new season, the Independent Women’s Football League’s Pittsburgh Passion has a new ad campaign that we absolutely love. By the way, the Passion are the only pro football team in the City of Champions that had an undefeated (12-0) season in 2007 (Steelers take note).

The headline in a large scale bus-shelter ad reads, in flowing script, “We celebrate the delicate flower that is woman.” This is followed by: “As well as the beauty of one delicate flower drilling the other delicate flower into the ground.”

A second ad begins: “A woman’s hand can heal, teach, inspire and comfort,” then concludes, “It can also deliver a wicked head-slap when the ref’s not looking.” Go Passion! You show the Steelers how it’s done.

Or that the women’s football season kicks off this month? From coast to coast, squads of young women step out of their roles as students, moms, and professionals to don full tackle gear and represent their communities. Most play for either the NWFA or the IWFL.

Pretty Tough has partnered with a number of these great teams to help raise awareness for women’s football and raise a few bucks as well.
