Chinese Gymnastics Team 2008October 2, 2008 - Surely there are a lot of Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin fans who were secretly hoping the investigation into the ages of the Chinese gymnasts would result in the U.S. Women’s Gymnastics Team being elevated to gold medalists.

The AP reported, however, that the age dispute has been resolved for the Beijing Games and the ruling backs the Chinese gymnasts. International gymnastics officials on Wednesday closed their 5 1/2 -week investigation into the ages of the Chinese gymnasts at the Beijing Olympics, saying the documentation provided confirms they were old enough to compete.

It seems little girls  grow up quickly these days, especially if they’re Chinese gymnasts. One day they’re just 14, the next day they’re 16.

The Chinese will tell you that Asian gymnasts are naturally smaller. There are no scientific tests that can tell age with perfect accuracy. So real proof has to come from official government documents. And official government documents say they are 16. Case closed.

Controversy has raged because younger gymnasts are considered to have an advantage - they are more flexible and are likely to have an easier time doing the tough skills the sport requires. They also aren’t as likely to have a history of injuries or fear of failure.

While China’s 2008 gold medal gymnasts are in the clear, the team that won the bronze medal eight years ago in Sydney, however, still faces questions. Two members of the 2000 squad—Dong Fangxiao and Yang Yun—remain under scrutiny.

For now, there won’t be any medals returned, or any suspensions announced. No one will be punished for breaking the rules. And Olympic officials won’t have to embarrass the Chinese, who just spent billions of dollars to host an extravaganza on their behalf.

It’s not like the same government that faked multiple aspects of the opening ceremony to make sure everything went according to script would give themselves an unfair advantage during the actual competition.

Nastia Liukin WheatiesSeptember 2, 2008 - At the Olympics in Beijing last month, Nastia Liukin followed in the footsteps of Mary Lou Retton and Carly Patterson, the two other American gynmasts who have won Olympic gold in the all-around competition. Now she follows them onto the Wheaties cereal box.

Wheaties, known as the “Breakfast of Champions,” will give Liukin her own special edition Wheaties boxes, General Mills Inc. announced Thursday.

Liukin, who is from Parker, Texas, won five medals in the Beijing Olympics, including helping the U.S. win silver in the team competition.

The special-edition boxes will be sold starting in September.

Not every Olympian is jumping on the Wheaties bandwagon however. Swimmer Michael Phelps, who stole the spotlight after winning a record number of Olympic medals, signed with Kellog’s, who will print pictures of Phelps on boxes of its Frosted Flakes and Corn Flakes cereals.

He KexinAugust 21, 2008 - It was only a matter of time.  After He Kexin won gold at the Olympics, many cried foul over her age. It’s no secret the Chinese choose and groom athletes from a very young age, and one only needs to look at He to see she’s barely reached puberty.

Now, according to the Times of London, the International Olympic Committee has ordered an investigation into mounting allegations that Chinese authorities covered up the true age of their gold-medal winning gymnastics star because she was too young to compete.

He’s true age has been a subject of swirling controversy since the Games began. Questions over her eligibility intensified after she edged out the U.S. gymnast Nastia Liukin for the gold medal in the uneven bars on Monday, and was part of the team gold triumph last week.

The minimum age for female gymnasts was increased from 14 to 15 in 1981, and up to 16 in 1997, to protect the physical and mental health of young athletes.

With the games wrapping up Sunday, the IOC wants to quickly end any lingering doubts about underage competitors. China coach Lu Shanzan said the  gymnasts’ parents are ‘indignant’ over age questions. In an interview with The Associated Press, Lu said Asian gymnasts are naturally smaller than their American and European rivals. Lu added that government documents have been repeatedly provided to dispel lingering questions.

How aggressive and sustained the IOC-ordered investigation will be remains to be seen. If it did ultimately result in the stripping of gold medals from one of China’s favourite athletes, it would be an Olympic scandal with reverberations far beyond the sport itself. Stay tuned….

August 21, 2008 - Long before Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin, long before there were age limits for competition, and long before the convoluted judging system used today, there was a young Romanian gymnast who received a perfect score during Olympic competition.

Nadia Comaneci, performing on the uneven bars, was the first gymnast to be awarded a perfect 10 in Olympic gymnastics history. The year was 1976, the Games were held in Montréal and Comaneci was fourteen years old.  Coached by Bela Karolyi, Comaneci would earn six additional 10s at the Olympics, en route to capturing the all-around, beam and bars titles and a bronze medal on the floor exercise. A much better result than her early firing on last season’s “Apprentice”.

The revised age-eligibility requirements in the sport, along with the new scoring system (how does that tiebreaker work again?), make it currently impossible to break her record. So without further ado, here’s what the first perfect 10 looked like:

2008 National Women’s Gymnastics TeamJuly 20, 2008 - Chellsie Memmel, Alicia Sacramone, Bridget Sloan and Samantha Peszek are going to the Olympics.

Memmel, who four years ago suffered heartbreak at the Karolyi ranch when she fell short of her Olympic dreams, is bound for Beijing, this time as a full-fledged member of the USA Gymnastics women’s 2008 Olympic team.

After a comback from injury, Memmel, 20, from West Allis, Wis., was named Saturday night alongside defending world champion Shawn Johnson, nine-time world medalist Nastia Liukin, 2007 world team members Alicia Sacramone and Samantha Peszek.

Considered locks after strong showings at nationals and Olympic Trials a month ago, Memmel, Peszek and Sacramone looked even better during the final selection process to earn spots on the team. Memmel had finished third at both the nationals and Olympic trials while Sacramone kept proving her value on vault and Peszek had finished a sturdy fourth at nationals and the trials.

That left one more spot up for grabs as 12 girls gathered at the Texas ranch, where they’ve come nearly every month for the last three years for team training.

Bridget Sloan, an alternate on the world championship team a year ago, upgraded herself with an impressive performance at the two-day camp. Sloan, 16, from Pittsboro, Ind., recovered from March knee surgery with pizazz and steady improvement. A sparkling vault and competent work on the uneven bars earned her the final spot.

Shayla Worley was expected to be in the mix, too, but she suffered a fractured leg Friday and had to hear the final line-up from the sidelines.

Alternates are 18-year-old Jana Bieger, who missed a starting spot with a couple of ill-timed falls, 15-year-old Ivana Hong of Laguna Hills, who was a member of last year’s U.S. world championship team, and 16-year-old Corrie Lothrop of Gaithersburg, Md.

“This is the strongest team we could pick,” national team coordinator Marta Karolyi said. “But it was hard. I was tearing up; my voice was choking out the words. This is the hardest part of the job because it’s been 10 years of hard work for some girls and you’re ending that dream.”

By now, we all know that the selection process is a heart-wrenching, sometimes subjective process that causes intense emotional and physical pressure. So, to those who made it - Way to go. Good luck in Beijing!

June 23, 2008 -  High scores and great performances by Shawn Johnson of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Nastia Liukin of Parker, Texas earned both guaranteed spots on the 2008 U.S. Olympic Women’s Gymnastics Team  following the conclusion of the competition at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials.

It was the moment of a lifetime for each of them. The friendly rivals, considered by many the world’s two best gymnasts, exchanged a heartfelt embrace. They’d done it. They’re officially on their way to the Beijing Olympics.

Now the fight is on for the remaining four spots on the team. Four gymnasts and three alternates will be chosen after a final selection camp at the Karolyi ranch July 16-20. Ten additional women were chosen  for the camp from the 19 competing at the trials including: Chellsie Memmel, Samanta Peszek, Jana Bieger, Chelsea Davis, Ivana Hong, Mattie Larson, Corrie Lothrop, Alicia Sacramone, Bridget Sloan and Shayla Worley.

Many believe Alicia Sacramone and Chellsie Memmel are a lock but who else will be heading to Beijing in August? While waiting to find out, check out Shawn Johnson’s floor routine from the Team Trials.
