Danica Patrick isn’t the first female to race a car. But she is the most famous. As a result, like Shirley Muldowney did years ago in drag-racing, Patrick has become an inspiration for young girls that they can do it, too.

Brandi Love and Alicia Kary are in the Olds College rodeo program and competing at the Canadian National College Finals Rodeo this weekend in all or some of the five events - including three roping events - for the girls.

The problem is, if the girls want to go the professional route in rodeo competition right now, they’re pretty much looking at barrel racing as the sole avenue.

But, both believe that can and will change someday.

Nora Hunt-Lee is a rodeo athlete who knows something about what it takes to be a successful competitor. While in high school, she won seven California high school championships. Later she added 12 regional college championships and two professional world championship titles to her trophy case. Today she spends much of her time working with young rodeo contestants and working toward her doctoral degree in counseling at the University of Nevada-Reno. (more…)

Rodeo is a window into the past as well as a fully modern sport with a huge following.

The beginnings of rodeo can be traced back to the Western ranches of the early 1700’s when Spanish cattlemen, known as vaqueros, influenced the American cowboy with their clothing, language, and traditions. Activities on these early ranches included roping, horse breaking, riding, herding, branding, and much more. (more…)

Female Bull RidersWe left for Utah Friday morning, June 18th for the Lane Frost Invitational Bullriding. We got there at 2:00.
