Can you smile even when your team is losing 48-8 to your biggest rival? Can you belt it out while still bustin’ a move? Do you love to perform? Do you have school spirit? Maybe you have what it takes to become a cheerleader.
You gotta have pipes if you’re gonna be a great cheerleader. If you make windows rattle when you’re yelling at your brother or sister, you’ve got what we’re talking about. You’ve also gotta be able to maintain that loud voice while performing routines. Practice the moves and the words together - a lot - because you might slip up if you’re concentrating on one instead of the other.
Try lying on your stomach while you belt out the cheers and concentrate on your gut. This will help you learn to yell from your stomach rather than your throat and your vocal chords will thank you later. While there is some debate whether Cheerleading is technically a sport, there’s definitely a competitive aspect such as when participants vie for top spots at regional and national championships. Participants are judged on their individual technique and appearance and on team choreography and execution. Using a combination of strength, agility, coordination and synchronization, cheerleaders tumble, jump and contort their bodies in various positions. And they do it all with a smile on their faces.
