Davenport comeback halted by Sharapova

Maria Sharapova after beating Davenport at the Australian OpenMELBOURNE, Australia Jan. 16, 2008 - It was billed as the blockbuster showdown of the first week, but fifth-ranked Maria Sharapova put an end to new mom Lindsey Davenport’s strong comeback, taking a 6-1, 6-3 victory Wednesday to reach the Australian Open third round.

The eagerly awaited match pitted Davenport, who was 19-1 with three titles since returning to the tour, against a former Grand Slam winner for the first time since she gave birth to son Jagger last June. It’s possibly the first time two former world number ones and Grand Slam champions have met so early in a major.

The early-round meeting between these two giants of the game was because Davenport was unseeded following her maternity leave.
