December 1, 2008 - Looking for something to do this month? Snow is falling across North America, and slopes are opening from East to West so we found some wintery events that sound like fun (though sadly we won’t be attending any of them).
Down-Mountain and Cross-Country: 140 Years of Skiing in Maine Dec. 1 - Maine’s skiing history goes back farther than any other New England state and a digital slideshow produced by the Ski Museum of Maine backs up that claim. The show will be presented Monday, Dec. 1 at 7 p.m.
Celebrity Skifest Dec. 5 - 8: Deer Valley is kicking off the ski season with Celebrity Skifest . The invitational ski event pairs former Olympic ski legends with television and film celebrities for a weekend of skiing, live music and fundraising for the environmental group Waterkeeper Alliance, which supports and empowers member organizations to protect communities, ecosystems and water quality.
The DV Celebrity Skifest will include giant slalom races on the ski resort’s Birdseye run, and the public is invited to watch as some of the best-known legends of U.S. skiing compete in this year’s event, including Deer Valley’s own Ambassador of Skiing, three-time Olympian Heidi Voelker. Celebrities scheduled to attend include Larry David, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Matthew Modine, Scott Wolf, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Gloria Rueben, Ian Ziering, Rob Morrow, Patrick Warburton, Neil Patrick Harris, Dylan Bruno, and Camyrn Manheim. The Skifest Race will be televised by CBS on Sunday, December 21st following NFL Football.
Free skiing at Hidden Valley Dec. 6-7: With 20 inches of snowfall so far this season and ideal snowmaking weather, Pennsylvania’s Hidden Valley ski and snowboard resort in the Laurel Highlands near Pittsburgh is open for skiing and riding with free lift tickets Dec. 6 - 7. In addition to the free skiing, Wintersports U, the resort’s new snowsports school, will offer 90 minute group ski or snowboard lessons at no charge to guests age seven and older through December 19th.
Summit for Life Dec. 6: The third annual Summit for Life Snowshoe Race caps off a weekend of activities promoting awareness and education of organ and tissue donation. The uphill nighttime race on Aspen Mountain and the weekend’s activities all benefit the Chris Klug Foundation, a nonprofit founded in 2004 to improve quality of life for donors, donor families, organ transplant candidates and recipients. Founder Chris Klug is a liver transplant recipient and the first-ever transplant recipient Olympic Medalist (Salt Lake City, Utah 2002, Snowboarding).
Stowe Mountain Film Festival thru Dec. 6 - The Vermont Ski Museum will host the 6th Annual Stowe Mountain Film Festival, a week-long celebration of mountain sports and culture in the northern Vermont ski resort town of Stowe. Each year, the newest releases from the ski/snowboard film industry’s top production companies, along with submissions from promising amateur filmmakers converge on the Green Mountains. The result is 8 days of adrenaline-pumping action, stunning cinematography and intense documentaries that are sure to whet your appetite for the coming winter season.
The screening schedule includes “My Own Two Feet” - a film produced without using any fossil fuel (that means no helis, chairlifts - only human power). It’s the result of months hiking, winter camping, and sub-zero nights in some of the remote terrain in the California Sierra Mountains. Featuring eighteen of the best and most diverse riders including female snowboarder Barrett Christy. And on Sat. Dec. 6, French filmmaker Cecile Cusin’s short film “Islenska” takes viewers on an adventure across Iceland.
Winter Dew Tour Dec. 18 - 21 - Some of the world’s top snowboard and skiing athletes (girls too! including Hannah Teter, Gretchen Bleiler and Kelly Clark ) will compete for the Dew Cup and a share of the $1.5 million prize purse offered at the end of the three-stop series, which will kick off December 18 in Breckenridge, Colo.
Ski With the Girls at Alta provides opportunities near Salt Lake City for early intermediate through very accomplished skiers, to gather and ski together in a non-competitive and fun environment - meets Tuesday mornings.
NE Ski Museum: The history of skiing in New Hampshire’s Mount Washington Valley is the subject of a new traveling photographic exhibit unveiled by Franconia, N.H.’s tiny New England Ski Museum. The display is located several miles north of North Conway village, where there is a sweeping view of Mount Washington over the alluvial plain of the Saco River.
