synthetic surface on which all international matches are played.
Attack
the team possessing the ball as it advances toward the opposing goal.
Blade
flat part of the hockey stick used for hitting the ball. The blade face is always on the left side of the hockey stick.
Bully
neutral re-start to play following a stop in the action, much like a face-off in ice hockey.
Clearing
when the defense stops an offensive attack by passing or dribbling the ball away from its goal; usually done by the goalie.
Covering
defensive maneuver in which a player positions herself between an opposing player and the ball in an effort to intercept a pass or to tackle an opponent moving with the ball.
“D”
slang for the striking circle. The D-shaped area formed by the 16-yard semicircle line of the striking circle joining the goal line.
Dodge
offensive maneuver in which a player moving with the ball steps aside to evade an opponent while still maintaining control of the ball.
Drawing
when an offensive player moves her body to try to pull a defender out of her position; also when a defender tries to draw an attacking player offside.
Dribbling
advancing the ball using a continuous series of short strokes; how players maintain control and move the ball on the field.
Flick
pushed ball that is raised off the ground.
Formation
lineup of players as positioned on the field.
Hit
moving the ball following a swinging movement of the stick.
Interchange
temporary switch of positions by two teammates.
Jab
technique of poking at the ball until the player with the ball loses possession.
Left Dodge
maneuver made by an advancing offensive player avoiding a defender by moving left with the ball.
Long Corner Hit
occurs after the ball goes out-of-bounds off a defender’s stick. The attacking team gets the ball five yards from the corner of the field.
Lunge
defensive move in which a player attempts to steal the ball away on the opponent’s blade side of the stick.
Marking
when a defender closely guards an opponent on or off the ball.
Offside
violation called when an offensive player is nearer to her opponents’ goal than the second-to-last defender when the ball is played or passed.
Passback
starts play at the beginning of each half or after a goal has been scored; players line up on their respective sides and a forward passes the ball back to a teammate.
Pitch
playing field; measures 100 yards by 60 yards, divided by a center line and a 25-yard line of each half of the field.
Pull Right
offensive maneuver in which a player, while moving with the ball past a defender, uses reverse sticks to pull the ball to the right of that defender.
Push
moving the ball along the ground by a pushing movement of the stick. Both the head of the stick and the ball are in contact with the ground.
Reverse Sticks
when a player turns her stick so that the blade points right, enabling that player to hit or push the ball in the same direction.
Scoop
lifting of the ball off the ground by placing the head of the stick under the ball and shoveling the ball forward.
Side-in (or Push-in)
putting the ball in play after it has gone out-of-bounds. Possession goes against the team that last made contact with the ball.
Spin Dodge
offensive maneuver in which a player spins her body around an opponent in order to avoid being tackled.
Stick Side
player’s right side.
Striking Circle
semicircle area in front of each goal from where direct shots on goal are permissible.
Tackle
defensive maneuver in which a player uses her stick in an attempt to take the ball away from an opponent.
Tackle Back
when a player takes the ball back after an opposing player has just successfully stolen it away with a tackle.
