In celebration of the two-year countdown to the 2010 Winter Games, the Cultural Olympiad team proudly presents a spectacular gala concert featuring Canada’s new generation of leading singer-songwriters. On February 12, 2008, the venerable Orpheum Theatre will resound with the eclectic blend of edgy acoustic pop, contemporary indie rock, and symphonic soundscapes.
One of Canada’s brightest rising stars, Feist headlines the evening. Feist will appear with her internationally-acclaimed band and will also be joined by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra performing world debut orchestral arrangements of a selection of her songs. These arrangements were especially commissioned by the Cultural Olympiad for this performance.
On stage, Feist can pivot from being the solo singer captivating a room with her guitar or take on the role of leading a band of world-class musicians. No one, least of all Feist, anticipated the tremendous response listeners around the globe would have to Let It Die, her debut album. Her name has appeared on Best-of-the-Year lists, and she has won numerous awards. Suddenly, a young woman who was an unknown ‘garage punk band vocalist’ in Calgary, had Top-10 radio singles playing around the world. Her sophomore project, The Reminder, is the result of her success on the road – touring for 33 months and covering three continents.
Joining the roster is award-winning singer-songwriter Ron Sexsmith, who maps the human heart with surgical skill and great compassion. He offers audiences his hard-earned pieces of wisdom, all set to strong yet gentle melodies and sung unaffectedly, with emotional eloquence and genuine soul. These are his creative signatures, and they have earned the Toronto-based singer/songwriter immense respect from his peers, critics – and a devoted international audience. His richly crafted songs have been covered by Sarah McLachlan, k.d. lang, Diana Krall and countless others.
Rounding out the program are Suzie McNeil, who will perform her Olympic- and Paralympic-inspired song Believe, which is supporting Canadian athletes through Own The Podium 2010; Jorane, the Montreal-based singer and cellist with a street-smart sophisticated sound; and Leela Gilday, 2007 Juno Award-winner for Aboriginal recording of the year.
