Girls Guide: Olympic Wire 8/10/08

August 10, 2008 -Here are some highlights from Day 2 of the Summer Games:

Beach Volleyball:
May-Treanor, Walsh defeat Japan in the rain - Reigning Olympic champions Misty May-Treanor (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Kerri Walsh (Saratoga, Calif.) opened Olympic competition by defeating Japan’s Mika Saiki and Kusuhara Chiaki 21-12, 21-15 at the Chaoyang Park Beach Volleyball Ground in Beijing.  The duo has now won 63 straight international matches, including 22 straight this season.

Gymnastics:
China women gymnasts take overall lead, U.S. second - China issued the challenge, and the U.S. women, severely handicapped after Samantha Peszek sprained her left ankle in warm-ups, couldn’t answer on Sunday. Sun Aug 10, 4:51 AM ET

Swimming:
Torres gets 10th career medal, leads USA to silver in relay -
The self-described “old lady” of the U.S. team anchored the American women to a silver medal in the 4×100m freestyle relay Sunday at age 41, earning her 10th career Olympic medal and first since 2000.

Tennis:
Ivanovic withdraws at Olympics -Top-seeded Ana Ivanovic withdrew from Olympic tennis Sunday because of inflammation in her right hand that has bothered her for several weeks. AP - Sun Aug 10, 8:31 AM ET
