Jan. 25, 2008 - Only the naïve would suggest that cover-girl good looks don’t matter when it comes to building a brand in women’s tennis, and on Saturday the Aussie Open will see the most photogenic grand slam final in history.
If ratings-savvy TV producers and dollar-smart marketing messiahs had sat down over a Foster’s to write a script for the women’s singles championship, they couldn’t have done much better.
In the blonde corner, there’s Maria Sharapova, and, in the brunette corner, there’s Ana Ivanovic.
While we love watching these pretty tough gals play, it’s hard not to bristle at some of the headlines touting the women’s final at the Australian Open.
Fortunately, the statuesque Russian and the sultry Serb are playing such irresistibly attractive tennis that, come Saturday, fans can savor and celebrate the sport for its intrinsic value. You go girls.
