Jan. 31, 2008 - If you’re a guy in the Banda district of India who beats your wife, or otherwise mistreats women, you’d better watch out. A posse of vigilante women wearing pink saris may soon come after you, and it’s not going to be pretty.
The remote Banda northern district is notorious for its ill-treatment of women and the “Gulabi Gang” (Pink Gang) isn’t going to stand for it. Having personally suffered abuse, these 200 self-styled female Robin Hoods are often forced to fight violence with violence.
Two years after they gave themselves a name and an attire, the women in pink have thrashed men who have abandoned or beaten their wives, confronted apathetic cops, and unearthed corruption in the distribution of grain to the poor. While we don’t necessarily advocate vigilante violence, until the rule of law can be established, it looks like justice will just have to be administered by grrrl power.
