COLUMBIA, Md. Feb. 24, 2008 : Maryland women’s basketball coach Brenda Frese is a first-time mother. Markus William Thomas was born last Sunday at 10:21 a.m. and Tyler Joseph Thomas was delivered 20 minutes later.
Frese wasn’t due to deliver until next month, but it became apparent in recent weeks that she wouldn’t carry the twins full term. She long ago stopped accompanying the team on road games and watched home games in a large, cushioned chair in front of the bench.
The coach announced her pregnancy to the team last summer during a meeting in the locker room. After telling the players that two oral commitments would be joining them in the spring, she showed them her sonogram. The team was delighted and incredibly supportive.
Frese made her first appearance today on the sidelines after the birth of her boys as the No. 4 Terps took on Florida State. She didn’t coach the first half, but returned after the break to guide the team from her trademark oversized chair at the end of the bench while assistant Daron Park roamed the sidelines. Maryland mades up 8-point deficit to beat FSU 92-84 in OT.
Earlier in the day, Maryland bid farewell to its seniors in a ceremony that produced tears from five players who have helped bring the program back to national prominence. Ah….the circle of life.
