Olympian Coughlin sets U.S. record in 50 freestyle

ATLANTA, GA - Nov. 30, 2007 - Natalie Coughlin set an American record on opening night of the U.S. short-course swimming championships Thursday in Atlanta. The former Carondelet High School and Cal star won the women’s 50-yard freestyle in 21.46 seconds, bettering the mark of 21.63 set in 2006 by Kara Lynn Joyce, who finished second in 21.81.

“For the longest time, I was at 22.0 and 22.1. That’s so exciting, to break it by a half-second,” said Coughlin, who won five medals at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
