April 19, 2008 - We’ve been paying a lot of attention to women’s football lately. Partly because our latest book, Playing with the Boys, is about a high school girl who plays football. But also because the women’s season kicks off this month and we’ve met such an amazing and eclectic group of athletes that participate in the sport.
To celebrate the new season, the Independent Women’s Football League’s Pittsburgh Passion has a new ad campaign that we absolutely love. By the way, the Passion are the only pro football team in the City of Champions that had an undefeated (12-0) season in 2007 (Steelers take note).
The headline in a large scale bus-shelter ad reads, in flowing script, “We celebrate the delicate flower that is woman.” This is followed by: “As well as the beauty of one delicate flower drilling the other delicate flower into the ground.”
A second ad begins: “A woman’s hand can heal, teach, inspire and comfort,” then concludes, “It can also deliver a wicked head-slap when the ref’s not looking.” Go Passion! You show the Steelers how it’s done.
