Practice pitching in your room

It’s freezing cold, raining buckets, snowing, or sleeting. You have a problem - no access to a gym, basement, or indoor facility. You’re stuck at home and the softball season is days away. What can you do? Pick up a ball and pitch in your room.

What You’ll Need:

  • Incrediball or Rag Ball Softball
  • Rolled up pair of large socks
  • Masking Tape
  • Mattress
  • Regular Softball
  • Glove
  • Sock Softball

1. Find the biggest pair of socks you own.

2. Roll the socks into a sock ball. Masking tape can be used to keep the ball together.

3. Create targets on your wall or mirror with masking tape. If you use a full-length mirror, you can watch your motion as you pitch to the target.

4. Complete your pitching drills or full motion using the sock ball instead of a softball. Pitch to the target. Practice a strong wrist snap.

Flip Your Mattress

1. Ask a parent to help you flip your mattress to its side against the wall.

Make sure the mattress leans against the wall. It should not be straight against the wall. Check with your parent to make sure it’s sturdy and won’t fall on top of you while you¹re pitching.

2. Stand about 5 - 10 feet away from the mattress. Use masking tape to create a target on the mattress.

3. Grab your Incrediball or Rag Ball. Work on your pitching drills or use the following knee drill. Pitch towards the mattress.

Knee Drill

1. Kneel on your right knee if you are right-handed. Kneel on your left knee if you are left-handed. Your other leg should be bent in front of your body in a 90-degree angle (half of a square).

2. Open your hips, so your kneeling leg is behind your bent leg.

3. Point your glove at the target and complete an arm circle. Release the ball at your hip. Work on perfecting your arm circle and release point.

4. For more advanced pitchers, use this time to work on different pitches.

This drill takes your legs away from your pitching motion and allows you to work on your arm circle and releases.

Wrist Snaps

1. Grab your Incrediball or softball and glove.

2. Stand up straight with your shoulders back.

3. Place your glove in front your body and release point.

4. Begin your pitching motion and end with a wrist-snap into your glove.

5. Work on your pitching motion, wrist snap, release point, and leg drag.

6. For more advanced pitchers, you can work on different pitches and release points.

Don’t sweat the bad weather again. Be creative and workout right in your room!
